Synchronous and Asynchronous Timer Settings

After setting a time limit on a quiz, instructors have the option to decide if the timer begins on a specified start date (synchronous) or when the student launches the quiz (asynchronous). Please note, if you do not have a start date set for the quiz, you will be unable to select the synchronous option.

  1. After setting the time limit, click on Timer Settings.

  2. If you would like the timer to begin when a student launches the quiz, select the circle next to "Asynchronous: Timer starts when the learner launches the quiz."

  3. To have the time for all students begin on the specified start date, select the circle next to "Synchronous: Timer starts on the start date."

Time Limit Expiration Settings

From the "Timer Settings" menu, instructors can also customize the behavior of a quiz once the time limit expires.

  1. To have quizzes automatically submitted when the time limit expires, select the circle next to "Automatically Submit the quiz attempt" underneath "When The Time Limit Expires."

  2. To flag the quiz as late, but allow the student to continue working, select the circle next to "Flag as 'exceeded time limit' and allow the learner to continue working."

  3. If you do not want any action to be taken when the time limit expires, select the circle next to "Do nothing: the time limit is not enforced."

  4. Click the blue OK button at the bottom of the Timing pop up window.

  5. Click Save and Close at the bottom of the Edit Quiz screen.
