Release Conditions Glossary


The following article details the specific types of Release Conditions.

Release Conditions allow fine control of access to different parts of your course. This is done by using specific criteria that must be met by the learner before access is granted. This article goes through the different types of release conditions and how their conditions are met. Condition Types

Each release condition type will be considered met by the learner (and release its associated materials to the user) when it returns True.

  1. Assignments
    • Submission to folder – returns True if the user has made a submission to the assignment
    • Received feedback on submission – returns True if the user’s submission has feedback in the Overall Feedback box and is published
    • Score on associated rubric – returns True if the submission has met a specific threshold on one component of the assignment’s rubric (i.e. Meets Expectations on Overall Rubric Score)
    • No submission to folder – returns True if the user has not submitted anything to the specified assignment
  2. Awards
    • Award Earned – returns True if the user has the specified Award listed on their profile
  3. Checklist
    • Completed checklist – returns True if the user has completed the entirety of a checklist
    • Completed checklist item – returns True if the user has completed a specific line item on the checklist
    • Incomplete checklist – returns True if the user has not completed all of a specified checklist
    • Incomplete checklist item – returns True if the user has not completed a specific line item on a checklist
  4. Roster
    • Group enrollment – returns True if the user is a member of a specified group. This can be set to be the group category or a single group inside of the category.
    • Org unit enrollment – returns True if the user is enrolled in a Brightspace organization. This includes ALL courses, campuses, development shells, etc..
    • Section enrollment – returns True if the user is in a specific section of the current course
    • Role in current org unit – returns True if the user is a specific role in the current course
    • Date of enrollment in current org unit – returns True if the user was enrolled in the current course at least a certain number of days from today. This can be set to be keyed off of the first time they were enrolled in the course, or the most recent time if they had been add/dropped.
  5. Competencies
    • Competency achieved – returns True if the user has the specified Competency completed on their profile
    • Learning objective achieved – returns True if the user has the specific objective completed on a specified Competency
    • Score on associated rubric – returns True if the user has met a specific threshold on one component of the Competency’s associated rubric (i.e. Meets Expectations on Overall Rubric Score)
    • Competency not yet achieved – returns True if the specified Competency does not appear on the user’s profile
    • Learning objective not yet achieved – returns True if the specific objective on a specified Competency has still not been met
  6. Completion tracking
    • Course Complete – returns True if the user has all completion tracking elements (all modules in Content with it enabled) marked complete
  7. Content
    • Visited content topic – returns True if the user has accessed (or completed) a specific content item
    • Visited all content topics – returns True if the user has accessed all content items, including ones that may not be currently visible to the user
    • Not visited content topic – returns True if the user has NOT accessed a specific content item
    • Completed content topic – returns True if the user has the completion tracking marked complete for a specific content item
    • Not completed content topic – returns True if the user still has the specific content item marked incomplete. The item could have been accessed and still qualify if Automatic Completion was not set for that item.
  8. Discussions
    • Posts authored in topic – returns True if the user has the specified number of posts made in a discussion topic. This can be set to count Threads, Threads and Replies, or just Replies in the count.
      • Note: to ensure that a specific number of each is met (i.e. 1 thread 2 replies), you would need to create two separate release conditions: one for Thread count and one for Reply count.
    • Score on associated rubric - returns True if the topic has met a specific threshold on one component of the topic’s rubric (i.e. Meets Expectations on Overall Rubric Score)
    • No posts authored in topic – returns True if the user has made neither Thread nor Reply in a discussion topic, no Thread, or no Replies.
  9. Grades
    • Grade value on grade item – returns True if the user has a specific score on a grade. You can use inequalities to set the value to be checked as greater than/less than.
    • Score on associated rubric – returns True if the user has met a specific threshold on one component of the grade item’s rubric (i.e. Meets Expectations on Overall Rubric Score)
    • No grade received – returns True if the user has no score recorded in the grade column
    • Released final grade score – returns True if the Final Calculated or Final Adjusted Grade column is released for the user
  10. Quizzes
    • Score on a quiz – returns True if any one quiz attempt has more/less than a given score for the user on the specified quiz
    • Completed quiz attempt – returns True if the user has a at least one complete (Hit Submit or autosubmitted) attempt for the specified quiz
    • Score on select questions – returns True if the user has more/less than a given score for a specific question on a quiz
    • Score on associated rubric – returns True if the user has met a specific threshold on one component of the quiz’s rubric (i.e. Meets Expectations on Overall Rubric Score)
    • No completed quiz attempt – returns True if the user does not have at least one completed attempt for the specified quiz
  11. Surveys
    • Completed survey attempt – returns True if the user has at least one complete attempt for the specified survey
    • No completed survey attempt – returns True if the user does not have at least one complete attempt for the specified survey
