A quiz can be linked to the grade book either by linking it to an existing grade item or by creating a new grade item during the quiz creation process.

Linking to an existing grade item

  1. Verify that you have a grade item for your quiz that does not already have an association to an another activity.  Grades items and their associations are found in the Manage Grades area of the grade book.  Note that the name of the grade item and the name of the quiz do not need to be the same.

  2. On the Quizzes page, either click the chevron next to the quiz name and select Edit if the quiz has already been created, or use the New Quiz button to start creating one.

  3. Look underneath the quiz name for the area that says “Not in grade book.”  Click that to open a drop-down menu and select Edit or Link to Existing.

  4. On the screen that follows, select “Link to an existing grade item” and select the name of the grade item from the drop-down menu.  Once that is done, click OK.

  5. You should now see that what previously said “Not in grade book” says “In grade book.” To finalize your changes, click Save and Close at the bottom of the screen.

Creating a new grade item

  1. On the Quizzes page, either click the chevron next to the quiz name and select Edit if the quiz has already been created, or use the New Quiz button to start creating one.

  2. If you are creating a new quiz, make sure that your quiz has been given a name.

  3. Look underneath the quiz name for the area that says “Not in grade book.”  Click that to open a drop-down menu and select Add to Grade Book.

  4. Your quiz point value should automatically equal the sum of the points of all of the questions the quiz contains.  However, if your quiz is empty and the points possible are zero, you will receive an error message.  Enter a point value for the quiz to resolve the issue.

  5. Once your quiz has a point value and “In grade book” displays under the title, click Save and Close at the bottom of the screen.

  6. The Manage Grades page in the Grades area will now have a grade item with the same name and point value, and the association column will read “Quizzes.”
