Overview of Grade System Options

There are two options for how the Grade Book can treat items that have yet to be graded: they can be filled in with zeros as placeholders, or they can be left blank so that only items that have already received grades impact a student’s average.

  1. Treating ungraded items as zeros effectively starts each student with an average of zero and has them gradually build towards 100% as grades come in.  A zero with an asterisk will display for each grade item that has yet to be participated in and graded.

  1. Dropping ungraded items effectively starts each student with an average of 100% and causes their grades to decrease as they lose points on class activities.  With this setting, ungraded activities appear in the grade book with dashes rather than zeros.
Note: By default, every new grade book is set to drop ungraded items.  A Grade Book must be manually set to treat ungraded items as zero if that is your preference.
