How to Adjust Browser Pop-up Blockers

Online students and faculty may find that when logging into their courses, the Open SUNY Browser Compatibility area alerts them to adjust their browser pop-up settings. This must be done to allow various features of the learning management system to function correctly. The following browser-specific directions will illustrate how to adjust these settings.


Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer 11 (Windows 10/8/7)

NOTE: Support for IE has been phased out. It is no longer supported by Microsoft. Furthermore, Bb support Versions 9 and 10 will end on April 5th, 2019. 

  1. Click on the Tools menu (gear icon) at the top of the browser window.
  2. Click Internet Options.
  3. Under the Privacy tab, click the Settings button in the pop-ups section.
  4. Enter the website address and click Add. Note that the address is now found in the Allowed Sites list.
  5. Click Close.
  6. Click OK to close the Internet Options window.
  7. The page must be refreshed before the Open SUNY Browser Compatibility alert will show that the pop-up settings are OK.

Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox

  1. When on the Blackboard login page, a slide-down status bar may appear at the top of the page stating that a pop-up has been blocked. 2016-04-15_1207
  2. Click the Options button on the right side of this bar.
  3. Choose Allow pop-ups for <site address>. You will need to click the Reload button at the top of the browser window to refresh the page and update the information in the Open SUNY Browser Compatibility area. 2016-04-15_1210

If this notification is not present, you will need to enter the website address manually into the blocker’s exception list.

  1. Access the exception list by clicking on the Tools menu at the top of the browser window, and clicking Options. For Mac users, click Preferences under the Firefox menu.
  2. Choose the Privacy & Security tab.
  3. Scroll down to Permissions.
  4. Click the Exceptions button to the right of Block pop-ups window.
  5. Enter the website address into the Allowed Sites window and click Allow.
  6. Click Save Changes.

Google Chrome

  1. When on the Blackboard login page, a notification button may appear at the top of the page stating that a pop-up has been blocked.
  2. Click the button to show the options menu.
  3. Choose Allow pop-ups for <site address>. You will need to click the Reload button at the top of the browser window to refresh the page and update the information in the Open SUNY Browser Compatibility area. 2016-04-15_1106

If the status notification is not present, the pop-up settings can be adjusted through the browser’s menu options.

  1. Click the Customize and control Google Chrome button (the three vertical dots located next to the address bar.)
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Within the Settings tab, scroll down to expand the Advanced link at the bottom of the page.
  4. Scroll down to the Privacy and Security section and click Site Settings.
  5. Click the Pop-ups and redirects option.
  6. Click the Add button next to Allow and enter “suny.edu”
  7. Click Add to close the window.
  8. Close the Settings tab.

Safari

Safari 6.0 and higher

  1. Click the Safari menu at the top of the screen.
  2. Select Preferences. s_pref.png
  3. In the Preferences window, select Websites.
  4. Locate Pop-Ups in the menu.
  5. In the bottom, right-hand corner of the screen, select Allow.safari menu

Microsoft Edge

  1. Select the settings menu (the … icon) button and select Settings > Privacy and Security
  2. Scroll down the list to Settings
  3. Switch Block pop-ups to off.
